Travelling as a lifestyle: how it's done

I find the most inspiring stories of travelling with kids comes from those who have made it their lifestyle. I’ve put together some examples of families who have, one way or another, made travel life their life, and blogged about it. Blogs offer a fantastic insight into the intimate details and realities of daily life, and these are some particularly good examples.

The Facebook group Single Parent Wanderlusters Traveling Around Australia is a particularly inspiring community for both full-time and holiday travellers. If you have any doubts about your ability to make travelling with kids by road work, then I recommend browsing the posts on this page. There are many members of this page who travel full time and blog. Two Plucky Girls have been travelling Australia by road (on and off) for years. Some on Centrelink payments live this lifestyle as an alternative to living below the poverty line at a fixed address. Cam and Jaiden's Excellent Adventure celebrates the honest and heart-warming story of a solo Dad home-schooling his autistic son as they travel Australia by caravan. This pair have been on the road since 2017, funded by Cam’s Centrelink payment.

A woman who has particularly inspired me is Esther Inman, founder of the Virtual Assistant Internship and 90 Day VA programs, which offer training and job boards for those wanting to work online. Esther is a tireless advocate for those wanting to find a way to live a location-independent life. She lives and breathes the lifestyle, operating her business from Bali for many years before moving back to the U.S.

During our travels in Malaysia, we were lucky enough to meet the Steenland family, who sold their house, bought a boat (SY Sea Monkey) and fund their travels partially through online freelancing. Their boat-schooled 14 year old daughter, Sydney, spearheads The Sea Monkey Project. A grass-roots conservation program that installs plastics recycling machines into Asian communities, providing them with a way to turn plastic waste washing up on the beaches into useful items. Sailing Zatara are a sailing family who sold up to live and home-school on a boat while circumnavigating the world. They utilise their You Tube Channel and sell memberships and “tickets” to help fund the lifestyle.

Travelling with kids: there are countless ways to do it, to fund it and to live it. I hope some of these examples inspire you as much as they have me.
